Welcome to the first column reporting the activities of Bangor Community Partnership. Several weeks ago, this paper reported on the melding of the Bangor Main Street Program and the Leadership Coalition. I am happy to report the merge has been a success.

In homage to the new name, the original logo, designed by Ed Demansky, local artist, has been redesigned; however, it still retains the skyline of three local historical buildings: the town clock, the Heritage Center and the “Jewel of Bangor”, our public library. The new design is a cooperative effort of three professional graphic artists, Matt Talese, Beth Lasky and Michelle Bautier, who generously donated their talents.

Our new logo, seen above, is an update of the original while still maintaining its identity.

Many exciting things are happening in the community. Take a walk downtown; notice the new sidewalks in targeted areas. More lamp posts have been installed on South First Street. Keep an eye open for new facades on several of the businesses, and notice the updated painting on the Colonial Hotel.

John Kasten, Borough Business Manager, has been instrumental in writing and receiving grants towards the town’s revitalization.

John Reinhart, Superintendent of Bangor Area School District and Frank DeFelice, Assistant Superintendent have been active in facilitating a joint effort among Bangor Borough Council, Bangor Community Partnership and Bangor Area School District, through a “Learn and Save Grant” of $5,000 awarded to the School District by the PA Dept of Education. This year it will be utilized by the School’s Horticulture Department students, grades 9-12 under the supervision of Ms. Amy Sakers and  Project Success,  grades 5 and 6, supervised by Ms. Sherri Clifford.  Plans are underway to design and implement the creation of a downtown Pocket Park. It will be located in the vacant lot on Market Street next to the Jacksonian Club. The group will have the expertise of Landscape Designer, Jerry Fuchs. He has generously volunteered his services. This “Pocket Park” project should to be completed in the spring of 2010.

The “friendly winds of change” have arrived in Bangor.

Stay tuned to this paper’s future columns informing you of the revitalization efforts pursued by the Bangor Community Partnership
